Korean dramas have been influencing the Indian lifestyle for the last few years. Nowadays we all must have come across teenagers and young adults obsessing over the actors and actresses of South Korea. They make them their idol and remain engaged in watching the shows and music videos almost all the time. The wave of Korean dramas has been successful. When covid hit India people were isolated inside their homes they switched to online entertainment. During that time the thing that fascinated them the most was K dramas and K-pop songs. And since then K dramas are being watched in India. Now it’s a favorite pastime to watch K dramas for Indians. TEENAGERS AND THEIR CHANGING LIFESTYLE
The behavior, the style, the accent, the food habits now everything a teenager or a young adult does is getting influenced by South Korean culture. But it would be a mistake to generalize this and refer to all individuals. To understand their language and to understand their songs people have started learning Korean. Now people are learning Korean to understand and directly connect with their idols. People, especially teenagers, find peace by listening to K-pop songs. They just don’t listen for enjoyment purposes rather they think that these songs provide them comfort. People are also buying merchandise from their favorite actors or artist by paying thousands of rupees. ADAPTATION OF KOREAN CULTURE People have started adding Korean culture to their life and daily routine. Even the food habits of people are changing day by day and people are preferring Korean cuisines. Research says that the consumption of Korean instant noodles Ramyun in India has been increasing rapidly. People are also preferring to do Korean-style makeup and religiously follow Korean skincare routines. The demand for Korean products has been increasing day by day which compels the Indian companies to export a lot of them from the Korean countries. Short Korean phrases are now being used to greet, address or say goodbye to someone in India as well. The dressing style is also impacted by Korean culture. The fans try to imitate the dressing style of their favorite idols. K-POP GROUPS AND K DRAMAS
There are a lot of K-pop groups and K dramas that people are obsessed with. One of the K-pop groups is BTS. BTS has been successful in grabbing the attention of almost all Indians and the songs it releases have been remaining on the top lists of the Billboard. They have also won Grammy awards. Recently one of the music videos named “That Karma” by one of the K-pop group Blackswan has been shot in Odisha, India. And one of the girls from India named Sriya Lenka has been performing as one of the members of the K-pop group Blackswan. And people say that Korean dramas are much different than the Bollywood films. People think that Korean dramas are a more realistic representation of life whereas Indian films are spiced up with melodrama and overacting. PRESENT SCENARIO Now everyone is aware of K-pop groups. People prefer to listen to Korean songs rather than their native songs. They are present in every nook and corner of the world and their popularity is rapidly increasing with each passing day. Every week dance competitions are organized and those who can copy the dance moves of the Korean artist accurately are given a chance to go to South Korea. And somewhere Korean dramas are addictive and give people a curiosity to know more and you and people end up watching the whole drama. IS THIS A BOON OR BANE Everything has good and bad aspects. Everything that has a good side includes a bad side too. As people are getting more influenced by K-pop groups it is harmful to our Indian culture as Indians are getting more attracted towards Korean culture without respecting our own Indian culture. They are unaware of our Indian culture. But at the same time, it is a boon to get to know about culture beyond our own Indian culture. The interest and excitement to learn a new language and understand it is a qualitative thing that will help us in the long run. CONCLUSION While getting hold of one thing one shouldn’t let go of the other. Even though people are more attracted to the Korean lifestyle, they shouldn’t give up on the Indian lifestyle. And it’s not only about India, K-pop groups have their followers in almost all parts of the world. And an excess of anything is bad. Putting dramas as the priority is a blunder that people, especially students, make. It is not wrong to watch Korean dramas but the priorities should be set right.
