It’s the holiday season in America, and everyone is buying video games! The video game ecosystem is largely dominated by three companies, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft. For the past 36 months, Nintendo has been leading the pack.
Context
Chips are a vital part of every electronic item that you use, and video game consoles are no exception. Throughout the pandemic, we all stayed at home and accessed the world from there. As a result, we bought new and the most modern tech products which led to a shortage of its crucial input, chips.
Unsurprisingly, the chip shortage impacted every ecosystem, every player, etc. One of the players still reeling is Sony.
Imbalance
For the uninitiated, PlayStation is wildly popular amongst video game lovers, as the supply fell short, the demand rose even more and as a result, the units of the latest PS5 did not hit the shelves, either on time or in lesser quantities but we still have the other two players who sailed through the crisis relatively well.
Taking away share!
Nintendo exploited the opportunity to the fullest and boosted its supply, so did Microsoft with its Xbox series S & Z. So the most imperative piece of the puzzle was the actual availability of these units while PS5 simply did not make it to the stores, be it online or offline!
Nintendo sold 1.13 Million units of its Switch brand in the month of November, some credits also go to the pricing, the range of Switch begins from $200 (Lite) and goes up to $350 (OLED). While Xbox & PS5 are priced on the higher end.
Demand remains wild
In the last 36 months, only once PS5 was able to outsell Switch, indicating that PS5’s popularity is here to stay but the lack of supply being the brand’s biggest issue, that as per reports would even persist in 2022 would continue to make Nintendo the undisputed leader.
