If I take you back to 1996, the Taliban started ruling Afghanistan and did until 2001 when the US ousted the organization mainly because it had many elements of terrorism and also decimated the culture of Afghanistan.
History repeating itself
Cut to 2021, the Taliban has again entered Afghanistan and overtook control over every province including the capital Kabul but now the situation is completely different, the US has withdrawn the military and political support.
Things are grim than ever and the nation is suffering a humanitarian crisis once again.
The events took an unexpected turn, the political and military setup of the nation has simply fallen apart, surprising everyone!
Afghanistan under America’s regime:
The United States built the Afghan Govt from the ground up and supported the military. In the past 20 years, America spent $89 Billion to make the Afghani army capable to face any challenge.
But the reality is, Afghani troops have fallen weak to the driven and motivated Taliban.
Some reasons!
To give a few reasons why something like this happened, first and foremost, the US made a special force comprising 20,000-30,000 troops who were highly equipped and trained which proved insignificant.
There were many Ghost soldiers in the Afghani who were mainly on books but never on the field, they just helped in ballooning America’s expenditure.
Needless to say, there was rampant corruption in the Asian country and hence, the soldiers never really got the required pay, morale, and leadership to fight such a battle.
The selection criteria were also heavily flawed, troops rather than getting selected for their competence were prioritized on the basis of their ethnicity.
Wrapping up
Since President Biden’s withdrawal announcement in April, every country is rushing to retreat their embassy staff and others from Afghanistan.
Most importantly, the US withdrawal has resulted in a pure power vacuum in the country which can be filled by countries like China & Russia, and if this happens, it’ll be a very dark night for every Afghani resident.
What do you think, can the international community accept the Taliban?
