Abortions are a real issue in any society and a high number of abortions are a telling sign of those cracks hence there’s a need to curb them. Now there is always more than one answer to a problem.
The Texas way
Let’s look at how the state of Texas responded.
A woman gets to know of pregnancy after 6 weeks, and all the abortion-related procedures begin from thereon. The Texas court has declared all those procedures illegal.
Not just that! The law is way more expansive than one can think of.
Firstly, it gives the power to the citizens to sue anyone who helps or provides their services for an abortion, if the lawsuit is successful, there’s a reward of $10,000.
Anyone in the whole process of abortion can be sued against, even the cab driver who takes the woman to a hospital.
No action from Supreme Court
The abortion-rights activists immediately moved the SC and filed an emergency request to block the law from going into effect, but the highest court in the country had a conservative majority of 5-4, hence rejected any request.
As a result, the law is valid in Texas. Moreover, the non-intervention of the SC is also encouraging other states who have similar plans in the work to move forward. On similar lines, Oklahoma’s law banning abortion will go into effect on November 1 this year and is currently not facing any legal issues.
The protest!
All the abortion providers and activists are protesting and raising their voices against the law that they perceive unconstitutional.
Their argument is also valid because whether to have a baby and when to have it is a completely independent decision to take, the legal system shouldn’t intervene in it.
That’s exactly the rationale of all the protesters who’re mobilizing support and will fight until they get answered.
Looking forward
The SC reconvene in October to give a final judgment about the same, if it doesn’t overrule any such thing, it’s going to be a tough time especially for women who belong to low-income categories and do not have the wherewithal or resources to move to another state for an abortion.
What do you think, how are things going to evolve?
